BUDAPEST, Hungary — Hungary’s foreign minister is accusing the United States of meddling in his country’s internal affairs and upcoming election campaign by offering funds for “objective” media.
Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said Wednesday that the U.S. action was “shocking and unusual” among allies.
The U.S. has expressed concerns about “negative trends” for press freedom in Hungary, such as a dwindling number of independent news outlets and the increasing control people close to the government have in the media market.
The U.S. State Department last week called for grant applications from media outlets in Hungary based outside Budapest. One goal of the $700,000 program is to “increase citizens’ access to objective information about domestic and global issues of public importance.”
The projects would be launched between May and July 2018. Hungary’s election is in April.

Well that certainly does not sound like a good thing. Who has the right to decides what is objective.....the foreign minister? The Hungarian people should be able to access any news that they please.
America has always tried to spread democracy. I can see now ,how we are beginning to hold back and become a more closed society. We certainly have our share of internal problems to deal with. We can not keep being the police man of the free world.
I hope that your coming election goes in the right direction.

Have any opposition politicians or media commentators in Hungary protested about this?

Oppositional parties and media criticize it, but they don't have power.

Nice list. Btw. Democracy is deteriorated during Orban. Many old ppl watching news on tv and they became totally brainwashed Orban-fans.
It seems to me EU's main problem is the stupid migrant quota and maybe US is concerned about Orban's pro-Russia policy.

Yeah. That would explain America's special interest in Hungary in this case. But I don't understand why Orban is pro-Russia. What does he (and Hungary) have to gain from that?
On the other point, the EUs immigratiion policies are spoiling the whole project. If they had given Britain back the right to control immigration then we would probably have voted to stay in. I would have done

When he came to power, declared his „Eastern opening”, building relationships with countries like Egypt, China, Turkey, Russia etc. Gov. asked Rosatom to build two new blocks of our nuclear reactor.
I don’t know what would he gain from it.
It’s saddening UK leaving the EU.
