A list I made:

Early Fantasy Novels Fantas14

So George MacDonald's Phantastes is the first proper fantasy novel . . .
Phantastes: A Faerie Romance for Men and Women is a fantasy novel by Scottish writer George MacDonald, first published in London in 1858. It was later reprinted in paperback by Ballantine Books as the fourteenth volume of the Ballantine Adult Fantasy series in April 1970.

The story centres on the character Anodos ("pathless" in Greek) and takes its inspiration from German Romanticism, particularly Novalis. The story concerns a young man who is pulled into a dreamlike world and there hunts for his ideal of female beauty, embodied by the "Marble Lady". Anodos lives through many adventures and temptations while in the other world, until he is finally ready to give up his ideals.

The edition published in 1905 was illustrated by Pre-Raphaelite painter Arthur Hughes.

C. S. Lewis wrote, concerning his first reading of Phantastes at age sixteen, "That night my imagination was, in a certain sense, baptized; the rest of me, not unnaturally, took longer. I had not the faintest notion what I had let myself in for by buying Phantastes."   [Wikipedia]

I haven't read any of them outside of Tolkien and the Conan series. I think that Fantasy came about as a result of the Celtic revival that occurred in the Isles.

Apparently, the bridge from fairy tales to adult fantasy was made by Hans Christian Andersen who wrote original fairy tales in a serious style;

History of Fantasy

On your point, I found this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Early_history_of_fantasy#Celtic
Celtic folklore and legend has been an inspiration for many fantasy works. The separate folklore of Ireland, Wales, and Scotland has sometimes been used indiscriminately for "Celtic" fantasy, sometimes with great effect; other writers have distinguished to use a single source . . . Its greatest influence was, however, indirect. Celtic folklore and mythology provided a major source for the Arthurian cycle of chivalric romance: the Matter of Britain. Although the subject matter was heavily reworked by the authors, these romances developed marvels until they became independent of the original folklore and fictional - an important stage in the development of fantasy.

I'm actually a little miffed that the Narnian series isn't there at all. Why not? It's definitely fantasy.

I was wondering earlier today if I should have included "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" (1950). I left it out because it's fairly clearly for children (I draw the line at talking animals). "The Princess and the Goblin" is a children's novel too, but that one is important for giving us the version of the goblin which became the standard in fantasy stories (especially The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, the orc being a slightly tougher and more evil kind of goblin).

I think another book you should consider is The Sword in the Stone, by Terrance White. Even though it's supposedly for children, it contains too much philosophy that children, even older children, probably won't fully appreciate.
It does have talking animals, but they are few.

I also disagree on the idea of talking animals, as talking animals feature a lot in mythology and folklore, which is where fantasy genre comes from.

If a god, angel, demon or wizard takes the form of an animal and talks then that's acceptable fantasy. But there has to be that kind of internal justification. And the talking itself would have to be a magical effect because most animals could not physically produce human speech (apparently a few can get close to it).

I’m going to vote for two early children's fantasy novels, “The Wizard of Oz” 1939 and “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” 1964.
Both are classics in their own right, and introduced a generation of Americans to the fantasy genre.
