The new film has put this piece of history in the news, so here are a few short videos about it:

The Nolan's movie is piece of shit, real shame and an insult.
After watching the film, I understand why many people complain about it here.

The Evacuation of Dunkirk in 1940 Empty Re: The Evacuation of Dunkirk in 1940

Post Aëlwenn Wed 25 Oct - 1:34

I just realized that my last message was quite virulent and without explanation.
Two reasons why I do not like Nolan's film:

-I usually like Nolan's films, especially Interstellar, one of my favorite movies, adoring space, technology, the question of life elsewhere, this movie is really exciting (and the music is sublime) . I love Memento a lot too.
The one in Dunkirk, which was realized in Dunkirk by the way, of numerous errors unworthy of Nolan. At certain times of the film, we see buildings in the background, dating from 2010.
A public trash sorting is visible, and top of all, many times have can see antennas 4G!
I think it's Nolan's first movie with so many mistakes.

-The second reason is general, and much talked about in France.
That Nolan chooses to focus on seven soldiers in particular, make the film intimate, no worries.
From the British point of view, what's more normal.
This is a highlight of the Second World War and modern British history. The beginning of a heroic resistance, The Battle of Britain (I am passionate about the battle of England since my uncle took me to see a Spitfire in action).

But where it becomes offensive, as French, it is the treatment of French troops precisely.

To get into precision, the evacuation of Dunkirk is 340,000 soldiers.
Among these soldiers, 130,000 were French, or 39% of the troops.
And in the movies, where are they? Nowhere, neither on the beach nor on the ships.
The only French soldier we see is represented as a coward ... cliché well known Anglo-Saxon on the French military.

To allow the evacuation of troops on the beach, 40,000 French soldiers are staying in the town of Dunkirk to fight and prevent the German soldiers from taking the beach. The Germans numbered 160,000.
Of these 40,000 French, 18,000 died, a real sacrifice.
35,000 are taken prisoner and sent to the camps.
In the movies, no treatment on this part, if not a slight allusion to the end ...

And for the evacuation itself, in the film all the boarding is English, fishermen and other civilians.
In reality, only 10% of the ships were civilian.
And in reality, 300 French ships participated in the evacuation, including three destroyers that were sunk.
No mention in the movies.

Many spectators in France were disappointed, because they felt a lack of respect for this part of the History, and in France a big fed the bowl for the Anglo Saxon mockery on this subject, you know, the "Stupid eating surrender monkeys" ...
In 1940, 60,000 French soldiers died in six weeks, 123,000 were wounded and 2 million were taken prisoner. 21,000 civilians, including many women and children, are killed.
A record higher than the Battle of Verdun, which made 163,000 deaths in ten months.

So this is not a criticism of this episode of the Second World War, very far from it (my primary school received each year English and Scottish veterans who participated in the liberation of our city).
I have immense respect for the courage of these men, who died for freedom, and for Europe.
I also have a deep admiration for the courage and resistance of the British, alone in the face of the Nazi ogre, and the ingenuity they have deployed in the fight against Hitler (breaking the Enigma code, radar, the courage of their pilots).
But it's really Nolan's movie that I find a shame and dishonest to History.
