North American Accents

Re: North American Accents
There are certain words and phrases that are very specific to the tri state area, for instance calling (running shoes) sneakers, (sandwiches) grinders and (liquor stores) a packie. And then of course the plural of you would always be youz guyz
The test was pretty much spot on for me.
When ever I travel to other parts of the country, I am always taken for a Yankee.
Interesting that you placed some what North East.

Can you tell where this woman is from by her accent?

Re: North American Accents
She sounds like she is from the mid west USA, maybe Minnesota or Wisconsin?

Re: North American Accents
She's from Ontario in South-East Canada I cannot tell the difference myself between most American and Canadian accents, but I thought you might be able to. The only American accents I know are New York, Southern and then the 'general' one.

Re: North American Accents
The only Canadian accent that I can pick up on is French Canadian, so I assumed she was American.
Her accent is subtle, it is definitely not a New England, Southern or Western (Texan) accent.
Maybe a little Californian valley girl at times, but when she speaks in her normal voice it sounds a little “flat” to me. The way that she pronounces her A and how she says desk droars.
She has an interesting voice and seems to be pretty good at impersonating people, not sure how accurate her British accent is, but she is a funny one.

Re: North American Accents
The “down east” accent is cool sounding to me, upper crust/transatlantic, but at the same time very down to earth and old fashioned. It is distinctly different than a New York or Boston accent, maybe a bit of French Canadian is mixed in too. I have a friend from Nashua NH who talks like that . . . more so when he drinks a lot of beah.

Re: North American Accents
Daily Mail, 29th December 2021:
Do accents vary across the Canadian provinces as they do in the US states?
Anglophone Canada has no strong urban dialect, nor vast areas with radically contrasting pronunciation patterns (such as the US north-south divide) and few ethnolects (such as African American). The country lacks the standard markers of dialectical diversity because of the way in which it was settled.
Canadian English was shaped by early immigrants from Britain and Ireland, and it was significantly affected by the arrival of 50,000 American loyalists to the British Crown during the Revolutionary War between 1775 and 1783. By the outbreak of the War of 1812, a significant number of Ontario’s 100,000 inhabitants were of US extraction. The result was a colonial American accent shaped by British English.
One exception is Newfoundland, where the population was disproportionately shaped by immigrants from southwestern England and southeastern Ireland. Since the island is isolated and joined Canada only in 1949, it has retained a unique accent.
