How populist are you?
https://www.opendemocracy.net/can-europe-make-it/crist%C3%B3bal-rovira-kaltwasser/populism-its-opposites-and-its-contentious-relationsh Quoting:
In concordance with what has been argued by many scholars in the field, populism can be understood first and foremost as a set of ideas. One of the clearest definitions in this line of reasoning is the one of Cas Mudde. According to this author, populism is:
“a thin-centred ideology that considers society to be ultimately separated into two homogeneous and antagonistic camps, ‘the pure people’ and ‘the corrupt elite’, and which argues that politics should be an expression of the volonté générale (general will) of the people”
https://www.theguardian.com/world/ng-interactive/2018/nov/21/how-populist-are-you-quiz
My result:
Most similar to Angela Merkel and least similar to Pablo Iglesias -
I usually come out as centrist on these political quizzes because I have hardline opinions on just a few issues, and on the rest I'm fairly mainstream.

But do you agree with this:OsricPearl wrote:I scored near Viktor Orban! How happy. ^_^

Innocently mention that you saw it in this forumI hope you don't mind me posting on apricity. I wonder how many people will reply?

Yes. The elites are garbage scum and should be abolished. I know this will create a new elite group of people, but at least they will know what happens if they push us too far.
I will try to add that somewhere. Most of the results are like mine, with center-right near Orban being the most common.

Re: How populist are you?
What would someone who was very right-wing but very non-populist be like? Non-populism sounds like being naieve about the selfishness in human nature.
I'm well aware that power corrupts and vested interests play a significant part in politics but, on the other hand, I don't go for conspiracy theories which generally involve great cynicism about people and tend to be quite ridiculous.

Ron Paul is a good example of someone who is very right wing but not populist. In the US, it would be someone who is more of a conservative socially with a libertarian bent. I wish he would have been president 10 years ago. It would have spared us a lot of grief.

Re: How populist are you?
I was not sure what to think about my results. What is the opposite of a populist?
I googled it and I see
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technocracy. Ron Paul would have made a good president. I have much respect for physicians, he is a well rounded individual.
Libertarian bent?
Yes, I do value individual rights over group rights.
The "people"..., populists are often influenced by what ever happens to be en vogue at the moment. The media has a way of twisting things, fake news, conspiracy theories, sticking our nose where it doesn't belong.
It seems that the older I get, the farther out in right field I go. Everyone else can do their thing, just leave me be.
Don't tread on me!

Re: How populist are you?
I have quite a bit of sympathy with the idea of technocracy. In British governments, politicians get moved around to different ministries as if they were polymaths, and it's obviously much to do with internal party politics. The latest Northern Ireland Secretary, Karen Brady:
The ministers can call upon expert advice, but they often reject it or water it down because they believe it would lose them votes (probably correctly in many cases).
But politics is about values as much as anything else. A compromise would be for politicians to need minimum relevant qualifications for the departments they control. Then at least they would be in a good position to appreciate the advice they receive.
In September 2018 she was criticised for admitting in an interview for House magazine, a weekly publication for the Houses of Parliament, that she had not understood Northern Irish politics before being appointed Secretary of State for Northern Ireland. “I didn’t understand things like when elections are fought, for example, in Northern Ireland – people who are nationalists don’t vote for unionist parties and vice versa,” she said. (Wikipedia)
