Sci-fi vs. Reality: Are we really going to colonize space?

Sci-fi vs. Reality: Are we really going to colonize space? Empty Sci-fi vs. Reality: Are we really going to colonize space?

Post OsricPearl Fri 16 Nov - 4:44

With all the talk of colonizing space, or even going back to the moon, there is a lot of speculation of what that would look like. Recently, there has been much talk about setting up colonies in Mars.

Now, Jeff Bezos of Amazon has claimed he wants to put one trillion humans in space. Yes, that is trillions with a T.
https://www.cnbc.com/2018/10/15/blue-origins-jeff-bezos-predicts-1-trillion-humans-in-the-solar-system-wired-summit.html

Blue Origin founder and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos predicts we'll have 1 trillion humans in the solar system one day — and he laid out Monday how the rocket company plans to help get there.

"I won't be alive to see the fulfillment of that long-term mission," Bezos said at the Wired 25th anniversary summit in San Francisco. "We are starting to bump up against the absolute true fact that Earth is finite."

Blue Origin's aim is to lower the cost of access to space, Bezos said. He will spend a "little more" than $1 billion next year to support Blue Origin, he said.

Will that happen? IMO, there is no way we will ever go back to the moon, much less colonize anything in space. The truth is that the people who would be capable of going back to space are having fewer children and becoming less numeral.

I believe a certain number of traits are necessary to go to the moon:

1. Intelligence - in the right areas. Writers aren't making space ships, it takes individuals who have high spacial IQ.
2. Ingenuity/inventiveness
3. A love for exploration and a desire to see what's beyond the next horizon.
IE Europeans.
Those having the high IQ necessary plus relevant skills are dying off. And when we're not dying off, we're wasting money and relevant resources on stupid wars and subsidizing the third world. Meanwhile, we're importing a group of people into our countries who will not fit in, and will not be able to maintain, much less increase, our technological standards.

I am really depressed about the future, actually. As someone who loves sci-fi, I fully expected us to have mega cities and space colonies sometime in the next hundred years. But I think that increasingly, it's going to look like Idiocracy with a high IQ, decadent upper class.

But OP, we have already put a man on the moon.
The technology that we have now some 50 years later  is much, much more advanced.
The world, for better or worse is a very different place then it was generation ago.
Humans are very resourceful, there many geniuses among us.

I would not be surprised if there are already the beginnings of colonization ,biospheres most likely on the moon.  You know, the moon is not that far away, just sitting there, beckoning us with her beauty.

Why would they tell us, if it is not for everyone.
It is the rich and powerful people that decide these things.
Like you say, the decadent upper class.

You know that NASA is on record as stating that they've lost the technology to go to the moon?

Does he mean a trillion people living in giant space stations? That would solve the problem for racial/cultural separatists since every group could have its own station and there could be general ones for those who don't care.

There's a possibility called terraforming: https://www.forbes.com/sites/quora/2017/06/26/can-the-moon-be-terraformed-for-humans/#

But maybe in future all efforts will have to be directed at managing climate change. Maybe some people will leave the planet and others will stay behind.

Nope, I did not know that.
I have only heard the conspiracy theories about how the USA never really landed on the moon.  The whole thing was concocted, so that America would beat Russia in the space race Rolling Eyes
That is some heavy woo woo if you ask me, not to mention very unAmerican!

Perhaps the NASA statement that we have lost the technology to go to the moon has been taken out of context? NASA seems to be very focused on Mars.
Space travel is expensive, it seems like the way of the future will have to be private companies or collaboration with other countries.

It is too bad/sad that we spend so much money on defense when we could be using it towards colonization of space.
Maybe some day , when women rule the world, we will get our priorities straight Very Happy
