The difference between rock and metal Empty The difference between rock and metal

Post Neon Knight Mon 7 Feb - 14:04

This video serves as quite a good demonstration of the two different types of guitar riff which, along with the drum beats, make the skeletons of rock and metal music. The essential factor is that rock rhythms are 'to-and-fro', bouncy rhythms suitable for dancing to whereas metal rhythms are 'flatter' and 'serious' with more repeated notes which, played at a medium speed, are more suited for marching to than dancing.

The Judas Priest riff, I think, is pretty much inbetween the two types of rhythm, creating a 'rocky metal' sound which was fairly common in the 1980s. Two examples of this:

I wonder if the Rock Metal guy is purposely throwing the metal horns backwards, I have a feeling he doesn’t have a clue.

This is something I've complained about on social media (being a pedant Smile 1 ). Dio popularised that gesture in the heavy metal world and he always did it palm outwards, never back-handed.

To me, the backwards version looks a bit aggressive, like an insult, whereas the orginial is like a salute. I don't know when the reverse version was first used but it first became common in the 1990s, probably with the rise of extreme metal. It's being done here by guitarist Rudy Graf of Warlock which would have been around 1985. Maybe the Germans started it then.

My theory is that it was subconsciously and erroneously copied from the Holy Diver album cover (1983):

The monster is sort of making the sign back-handed, but that's only because his arm is in a low position from which it would be very awkward to turn the hand around palm outwards.

You could also say that the correct hand signal is part of the Hook ‘em Horns UT chant, but seeing you are from England it might be a little too suspicious Wink 2

The right way to throw it, like Dio explains, is to ward off evil. When it is flashed the opposite, either the person doesn’t know what they are doing or they intend it to be a sign to Satan.
Or maybe they are trying to look cool or something?
