Moral Questions & Dilemmas
"If someone who knew the future, pointed out a child to you and told you that that child would grow up totally evil, to be a ruthless dictator who would destroy millions of lives... could you then kill that child?"
Between the velvet lies, there's a truth that's hard as steel
The vision never dies, life's a never ending wheel - R.J.Dio
Re: Moral Questions & Dilemmas
In the clip, the characters are dramatically making a life or death decision, as simple as touching two wires together. To intentionally kill someone and actually do the deed, I imagine, would take a certain kind of person.
Perhaps under certain circumstances we would all be capable but,
I don't think that I could ever bring myself to murder anyone, especially a child
And why even trust a person telling you things about a future, that has not yet past?
If the prophecy was meant to be, then it would not matter if it were this child or that, to set the events into motion.
No.

Re: Moral Questions & Dilemmas
I think similarly about that ^ - it would be the ultimate way of playing God. I also think that, if time travel were possible, any change made to the past such as preventing the Norman Conquest would start a separate branch of reality from that point, creating a parallel universe where events took a different course, but the history in the original universe where the time-traveller came from would be unaffected. So to witness the effects of the change, the time-traveller would have to be able to cross into the parallel Earth at a future date.

A harder version of the problem:
Suppose scientists developed a scan for unborn children which could accurately tell by analysing their brain structures if they would grow up to have psychopathic personalities. Would it be justified to abort the babies who were future psychopaths?

Aborting babies because they will someday grow up to potentially have a personality disorder?
That sounds morally evil to me.

Not potentially, but almost certainly - an uncaring person who will either be a criminal or cause a lot of emotional harm to others in everyday life.Sary wrote:Aborting babies because they will someday grow up to potentially have a personality disorder?

Well... I guess that would be one way to deal with the problem

Re: Moral Questions & Dilemmas
In practice, if there was such a psycho-detecting brain scan, it would probably only work for unborns in the last few weeks, and I personally wouldn't approve of abortion at that late a stage for the puropse of eliminating most psychopaths from society. But such a child would have to be carefully monitored from a young age and should probably not be given full freedom until he got to about 40. I think in future most people with strong criminal potential will be recognised by their late teens.

Re: Moral Questions & Dilemmas
It has been well established that many personality traits are genetic and heritable, so an abortion could theoretically be preformed early in a woman's pregnancy.
Maybe that would make it a little more palatable?
I believe that life begins at conception.
There is no such thing as being a little bit pregnant.
This is not a difficult moral dilemma for me, I am pro life
I hope that if in the future, we ever start monitoring people with the genetic predisposition for psychopathy, there would be a support system in place to help these people grow into caring law abiding citizens. Nurture will always play a role in human development. The brain is neuroplastic and has the ability to change and reorganize.
For males, 25 years old seems to the age when criminal tendencies would be evident if they are going to surface.

Re: Moral Questions & Dilemmas
Another dilemma:
Imagine you are in charge of a hospital during a very serious viral pandemic which affects young and old alike. You don't have enough resources to help everybody. Do you automatically prioritise the treatment of the young over the old, or decide it randomly, or what?

Re: Moral Questions & Dilemmas
Ideally every person, young and old alike, should be treated equally and triaged according to the seriousness of their illness.
If fast decisions had to be made, then yes I would absolutely prioritize the young over old.
We must except the limits of medicine and treat the demographic most likely to respond...young people with no underlying conditions.
My moral dilemma would be treating incarcerated felons with life saving resources regardless of age.
I feel like they have forfeited their right to be treated before people that live a decent life.
It makes me feel guilty to think that way.

Re: Moral Questions & Dilemmas
I think it is instinctive for a neutral person to try to save the young first, but there's also the spiritual/philosophical view that all lives are equally precious. So I think I would compromise by giving each patient a random number with priority for the highest, but there would be a bias toward the youngest. E.g. members of the yougest age group get a number from 40-100, those in the middle group a number from 20-100 and those in the oldest group a number from 1-100.
I think many people would support reducing priority for serious criminal offenders, but maybe that would be punishing them twice over. If that was to be done it should be included as a possibility in the original sentence for the crime.

Re: Moral Questions & Dilemmas
Is it right to solve a moral dilemma by tossing a coin or rolling a die? Does that mean God decides for you? If not, then who or what does decide for you by such methods?

Re: Moral Questions & Dilemmas
I suppose that if there is no logical answer to a dilemma, tossing a coin is a just way to make a decision. I have done this on occasion.
I don’t think it is God making the decision...maybe it is fate?
This is a confusing question for me.
Maybe I am over thinking it.

Yeah, this is what we are seeing now with the distribution of the Covid vaccination. It will ultimately be the states that decide who will be first in line to get it and some believe that it should be based on race rather than old people who need it most, because most old people are white?
It makes no sense.
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9070555/Half-states-want-prioritize-black-Hispanic-Every US state has been advised to consider ethnic minorities as a critical and vulnerable group in their vaccine distribution plans, according to Centers for Disease Control guidance.
As a result, half of the nation's states have outlined plans that now prioritize black, Hispanic and indigenous residents over white people in some way, as the vaccine rollout begins.
According to our analysis, 25 states have committed to a focus on racial and ethnic communities as they decided which groups should be prioritized in receiving a coronavirus vaccine dose.
