Re: Your Position on NATO
I'm open to argument, but to begin with I have to say Yes to NATO. Can Russia be trusted to keep to its own borders or even to the Iron Curtain borders?

That's a dificult question.
I know officially what is NATO, but I smell there is something deeper. Some goals who are hidden to us.

Re: Your Position on NATO
By default I am against my country's membership in any long term, international alliance, be it the NATO or any other alliance.
Such agreements cannot be combined with a foreign policy which aims to always look after the specific interests of the nation.

Re: Your Position on NATO
We Serbs obviously have no kind feelings towards NATO.
But I understand its role and "necessity" of existence.
There has to be balance in world, whether we like it or not when it breaks over ours backs, and as our geographer Jovan Cvijić said, it's our own fault that we decided to build our home on middle of the Emperor's road, and then complain about always being situated between the hammer and the anvil.
I haven't a clue how the whole ascension to NATO will go for Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Hopefully due to the inner turmoils in the NATO itself (Turkey and Greece are close enough to us for comfort, constant bickering over how much should the member states cash in for their "protector" and such), NATO will leave us alone for the indefinite future, rather than take on even more problems.
Some Bosniaks seem to think that joining NATO will be the last brick in their grand Bosnian house, but I think they're just grasping for straws on this one.
I only fear that joining NATO for Serbia, by some hapless politician's choice, would eventually kick-start repetition of history once again, and we'd find ourselves in same situation we were back in April of '41.

Re: Your Position on NATO
My personal belief is that NATO ran its course and is now useless, and dangerous. It should be disbanded.

Re: Your Position on NATO
I think that it is in the best interest for the USA to keep a hand in NATO.
It seems like the EU is falling apart and I would hate to see communism take over the smaller Eastern Europe countries that need protection.

Re: Your Position on NATO
Some opinions from Quora on what would happen if the US left NATO (I'll just post one):
https://www.quora.com/What-would-happen-if-the-U-S-left-NATO-and-withdrew-from-Europe
"Clearly its a hypothetical question but... In reality though NATO is the US and US is NATO. NATO is a way of the US pushing its foreign policy in a slightly less (perceived) partisan way than acting on its own. The other members of NATO do what they are told in exchange for US military protection. It is impossible for NATO to exist without the US. In the same way it would have been impossible for Russia to leave the Warsaw Pact without it dissolving. The Warsaw Pact didn't make decisions on its own, it did the bidding of Russia the same is true of NATO.
Back to the hypothetical question. What if the US decided to leave Europe? Its military presence in Europe is relatively small so in that respect it makes little difference. Circa 62k troops out of a total of 1.3 million!
The idea that Russia suddenly invades is preposterous and very much against Russia's foreign policy approach of the last 50 years. - Anyway the rest of the European countries military outstrips Russia in pretty much every regard. There would be a pact between Germany, France, Italy, Spain, UK etc and that would be sufficient if any attack happened, however unlikely. Britain alone spends more than Russia on its military, $56billion versus $51billion in 2015.
However the key is that Europe and the US are vital to each other as trading markets. A war in Europe would cause economic carnage in the US. In 2014 trade between Europe and the US accounted for circa 50% of the worlds GDP $272billion in US exports and over $400billion in imports. So even if no NATO the US would need to protect its trading markets."

"Germany and France already seek a plan B should NATO collapse, but without the United Kingdom in the European Union, an all-European approach is likely to fail. The added insecurity of NATO’s collapse would also amplify current populist movements in Europe. The consequence could be renationalization of European militaries, a system that brought conflict to the 19th and early 20th centuries . . .
So the answer is clear. Life without NATO would be more dangerous and less prosperous. Russia and China would be the big winners at America’s expense. NATO simply can’t retire. Yes, NATO has problems. It needs to be managed. But there is too much left to be done for retirement. And there is too much to lose if NATO fails."
