Philosophy of Mind Empty Philosophy of Mind

Post Neon Knight Mon 30 Nov - 23:22

Definition from Britannica.com:
"Philosophical reflection on the nature of mental phenomena and especially on the relation of the mind to the body and to the rest of the physical world. It is specifically concerned with the nature of thought, feeling, perception, consciousness, and sensory experience."

A brief summary of the main theories:

Materialism
A person is made entirely of physical particles and conscious experience is some kind of illusion.
PROBLEM: Doesn't explain our everyday, very real impression of being aware and self-aware.

Psychism/Idealism
Conscious minds exist in their own right and the universe is a kind of shared dream, constructed jointly by many minds.
PROBLEM: Doesn't explain where conscious minds get the information from to construct the universe.

Dualism
Conscious minds and physical objects are essentially different types of things.
PROBLEM: Doesn't explain how mind and matter can interact with each other if they are completely different.

Panpsychism
All matter is conscious and always has been, even the smallest particles.
PROBLEM: Still doesn't explain how mind and matter can interact or how it is that many different conscious particles can unite to produce a single human conscious mind.

Which one do you find most convincing?

Probably Materialism.

The soul drives the mind.
The body/brain and mind are the same.
I think.
Lol

Assume here that mind and soul mean the same thing.

If they are the same thing, then I would say dualism. But I think there is a distinction, between the mind and soul. An overlap of Materialism and Dualism.

There are occult theories which say that there are a number of 'subtle bodies' within the physical body like a Russian doll e.g: physical body -- etheric body -- astral body and that the soul is at the centre or on the highest plane. So your idea of the mind could be the etheric body in this view.

My latest position is that the soul-mind is like a conscious eye that sees the physical world through the physical body but can also see into a 5th dimension (after height, width, depth and time). So if I say to you "Think of a fruit", some of the physical info. in your brain's memory of fruits will appear as a picture of, say, an apple in your imagination. So the electro-chemical info. about the apple in your brain is physical but the picture is non-physical, existing in the 5th dimension. A psychic person has the ability to see 'further' into the 5th dimension beyond the 'local area' of his or her imagination. When a person dies, his or her soul-mind disconnects from the body and then only exists in the 5th dimension.

This idea is probably influenced by an interesting book I once read called The Traveller's Guide to the Astral plane:

EDIT: Actually more influenced by this one -

Yes, the physical and the non-physical existing in the 5th dimension...neutral “stuff”, not really different at all. I think that is what neutral monism basically is.
Thanks for links to the text,  it looks interesting and surprisingly it is available for free.  I will definitely read it. Maybe I will learn a few of your astral Tricks  LOL 1
Now, I am re reading a book I picked up this past summer. It is about John Dee and Elizabethan America. The first time I read the book I didn’t really understand what the author was explaining about cosmology and Dee’s esoteric ideas, some of it is quite deep. This time around I am jotting down notes and it is becoming more clear.
I find that with nonfiction, I often have to reread. Especially if it is very heavy content.

I don't know any astral tricks  Smile 1  but I know a few tips about lucid dreaming (a related subject which I've mentioned before somewhere). The main diagrams from the chapter I noted:
Philosophy of Mind Astral10

The figure facing right is the physical body in which the self moves through and experiences the physical world, and the figure facing left is the astral body by which the same self experiences the astral world and, according to the theory, can move through it.

This diagram reminds me of the Roman god, Janus.

Two sides to the same coin. There is only one coin.
The soul, I think is both.

Lindybeige (not his real name) ponders a question very relevant to philosophy of mind:
