23andMe update
New 23andME update has changed things. Gone is my British score, instead replaced with a high French score.
Old one:
New One:
It got my regions very well! The regions that highlights is where the majority of my Spanish ancestors came from, although most were from Asturias instead of the Canary Islands.
I'm actually pretty bummed about my disappeared British score and the high French score.
I guess I'll have to get used to it. ;p

Nice! Hello fellow French Woman. (LOL)
You so lucky to have the British and Irish.

Re: 23andMe update
^ I only know of one of my ancestors that was British/Irish, my GGGG Grandma Miller. She somehow snuck in the line, 9.9% seems like a lot.
My fathers family tree has all French surnames, I am surprised to see so many different nationalities in my composition.
and now, I have become Spanish and Portuguese! This must be some kinda weird internet osmosis
The 13% increase in my Polish power seems to be more reflective of whom I think that I am.
Look at you OP, .5% Native American ......fancy!

Re: 23andMe update
23andMe appear to have difficulty distinguishing ancestry from adjacent European countries in Americans but are on surer ground with Europeans who are not much 'mixed'. But this is interesting - for the first time they have given me some specific DNA from outside Great Britain & Ireland:OsricPearl wrote:New 23andME update has changed things. Since I've found only English/Irish/Scottish surnames in my family tree so far, then those results are probably false and might be for you as well (unless we go back to medieval times perhaps). The regions they give me for the UK are fairly accurate apart from London which I've no evidence for:
United Kingdom has 165 administrative regions, and we found the strongest evidence of your ancestry in the following 10 regions.
Greater London
Merseyside
Greater Manchester
Lancashire
West Yorkshire
West Midlands
Glasgow City
Belfast
North Yorkshire
South Yorkshire

I understand the Spanish/ Portuguese and British/ Irish combination, but
French and German Are not the same.

Re: 23andMe update
They've given me a list of Irish places as well (about half the surnames in my ancestry are Gaelic):Sary wrote:Wow, you are almost pure Englishman....if not for the 2.9% French German
County Dublin
County Cork
County Kerry
County Mayo
County Galway
County Donegal
County Clare
County Cavan
County Longford
County Wicklow
I think many Irish immigrants to England were absorbed into English Catholic communities, so their children would have grown up with English identities.
Gud ved! Men jeg vil gerne sige, at det var noget frygtindgydende vikingAnd who is the Scandinavian?

I know. It's very strange. I don't think as the French and Germans as being that close.
Neon Knight, those are good scores. Those other admixtures are probably come from some old migration or something. I could see the French coming with the Normans and the Scandinavian coming with the Normans and the Danes.

Half Irish half English = hybrid vigor, that has been shown to be the healthiest mix. I always thought that I was half and half, but I guess that I am not. I never imagined Italian!
NK, your parents DNA is no doubt even more specific than your results. That must be so nice having such a deep heritage. Very nice.
Even still, I would be wondering about that Viking. He could have been a raper!

Re: 23andMe update
My Irish heritage is purely genetic (apart from my names). I did once go through a bit of a 'Celtic' phase but when I went to Ireland on holiday it just made me feel more English.Sary wrote:That must be so nice having such a deep heritage. Very nice.

Re: 23andMe update
I never thought there was huge difference between the Irish and English people. I realize that there is a history , both religious and political but ...
England and Ireland are so close to each other, even 23 and me lumps the genes together.
I guess that is a good thing, both countries maintaining their own identity.
Interesting, how visiting Ireland, cured you of your Celtic phase.
Good thing you didn't go and get a Celtic cross or shamrock tattoo!
Europeans must get a kick out of how intensely Americans celebrate St. Patrick Day, here in the USA.
So many American people love too claim Irish heritage, no matter how small it may be. They are very proud people, the Irish Americans.
It is funny, now that I think about it:lol1:

Re: 23andMe update
I don't think there is a huge difference between English and Irish people, but the smaller neighbours always seems to put more effort into showing their identity. I think it's a pity there is not much (if any) celebration of English roots among Americans.Sary wrote:I never thought there was huge difference between the Irish and English people. Re: 23andMe update
Yes, there really should be some sort of recognition/celebration for the English. After all America was born from England. It is a shame that Ireland gets all of the attention and Irish people have all of the fun.
Saint George's Day, April 23 would be a logical choice, and a pretty time of the year.
But it may be too Catholic?
I like Boxing Day, December 26th, but that may be a little too close to Christmas.
The Queen could always decide the date. She will know.
We could eat meat pie ,drink pints, figgy pudding for dessert.....yum!
Lol what else NK?

Re: 23andMe update
St George's Day would be ideal. Something like this:
There's lots of English beers to try with fish & chips and maybe you get hold of some trad. English sweets:

And as well as the medieval themed stuff you could play a bit of cricket or bowls and watch some Beatles and Rolling Stones Tribute bands. And if it rained that would be especially appropiate!
