There's only 11 mins of play in an American football game

There's only 11 mins of play in an American football game Empty There's only 11 mins of play in an American football game

https://qz.com/150577/an-average-nfl-game-more-than-100-commercials-and-just-11-minutes-of-play/  Quoting:

For five months of the year, the National Football League dominates Sundays in the United States; it’s more popular than church. The NFL’s popularity is all the more remarkable when you inspect the fare it has to offer each week on television. An average professional football game lasts 3 hours and 12 minutes, but if you tally up the time when the ball is actually in play, the action amounts to a mere 11 minutes.

Part of the discrepancy has to do with the basic rules of American football. Unlike hockey or basketball, the 60-minute game clock in football can run even when the ball is not in play. That means a lot of game time is spent standing around or huddling up before each play begins.

The 11 minutes of action was famously calculated a few years ago by the Wall Street Journal. Its analysis found that an average NFL broadcast spent more time on replays (17 minutes) than live play. The plurality of time (75 minutes) was spent watching players, coaches, and referees essentially loiter on the field. An average play in the NFL lasts just four seconds.

Of course, watching football on TV is hardly just about the game; there are plenty of advertisements to show people, too. The average NFL game includes 20 commercial breaks containing more than 100 ads. The Journal’s analysis found that commercials took up about an hour, or one-third, of the game.

Football’s stop-and-go nature makes it particularly prime for commercials, unlike soccer, which forces broadcasters to creatively insert ads during the 45 minutes of continuous play in each half. Broadcasts of NFL games in Europe, incidentally, include far fewer commercials.

I stopped watching american football a long time ago for this very reason. After the ball hits the ground, a whistle is called and everyone stands around while they adjust the ball and everyone moves up (or in some cases, down) the field. It is so boring. I may as well watch Baseball, as at least that one doesn't have the pretense of being action packed!

A lot of male sports fans are quite geeky. They enjoy perusing statistics and arguing about ambiguous refereeing decisions.

It's really hard to follow this kind of sport for me.
I have always been use to sport without any cut like football, rugby or handball.
US football seems exciting and epic when you watch some youtube video about best moment. But it's a torture to watch a full game.

I think rugby might take a spot in the USA.

American Football has exciting moments in it, but it's held down by many minutes of downtime between plays. It's gotten worse due to changes in the quarterback (the guy who throws the ball). Simply put, they're crying about a lack of diversity in quarterbacks (it's the only spot besides kicker where the player is usually white, otherwise, it's black or samoans). But the problem is, that black quarterbacks have proved to be poor throwers, and they almost always revert back to doing what they love to do best -run. Running plays are shorter and less exciting than throwing plays, and it causes more downtime in general.

That being said, I'm so used to stop/start games, that it is difficult for me to follow sports that are constantly on the move, like Football.

LOL 1  It was the 'samoans' there that got me laughing - quite an obscure ethnicity.

Haha. yes. I know.  Samoa is an American territory, so there are quite a few of them here. They tend to be big and bulky, so they make good football players (especially linebackers and defensive/offensive linemen). I met a samoan former player (he admitted he was a bench warmer), and he was huge.

One got caught in a scandal some years back, where he claimed his girlfriend had died of cancer but it ended up being that his "girlfried" was a black guy who had been pretending to be a girl over the phone.

http://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/8851033/story-manti-teo-girlfriend-death-apparently-hoax

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Notre Dame says a story about Manti Te'o's girlfriend dying, which he said inspired him to play better as he helped the Fighting Irish get to the BCS National Championship, turned out to be a hoax apparently perpetrated against the linebacker.

The university issued a news release Wednesday after Deadspin.com reported it could find no record of Lennay Kekua existing.

I didn't know this but indeed, it's seems part of samoa is an american territorry. But Samoa is also an independant country. I only knew the second one.

Samoans are impressive physically. They have a crazy number of high level sportsmen in Rugby but it seems also in US foootball and catch. It's pretty incedible if you took the size of the population and the number of professionnal sportsmen.
They are literrally all huge.
