The Marrakesh Migration Declaration / Pact

Post Neon Knight on Tue 19 Jun - 0:38

https://www.theglobepost.com/2018/05/02/hungary-euro-african-declaration/ Quoting:

Hungary on Wednesday refused to sign a declaration recognising the advantages of migration, despite its adoption by more than 50 European and African countries at a Morocco conference. Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijarto slammed the declaration for portraying migration as “a phenomenon that is necessarily only good and favourable and which obviously contributes to the global development.”

“We think this is a unbalanced approach and we disagree with it,” he said.

Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban was re-elected last month on a hardline anti-immigration platform which has seen him clash with Brussels and draw criticism from rights groups. A Council of Europe report last week criticised the country for failing to do enough to identify potential victims of human trafficking in its “transit zones” for migrants and asylum seekers.

The Morocco declaration called for an “approach based on human rights” and the “protection of migrants in vulnerable situations” as well as efforts to tackle racism and discrimination. It also covered illegal immigration and ways to help migrants return home, key talking points for European nations which have seen an influx of migrants in recent years.

It was signed by representatives from 27 European and 28 African countries at a conference on migration and development in the Moroccan city of Marrakesh. European Union migration commissioner Dimitri Avramopoulos praised the declaration.

https://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/12363/europe-africa-immigration  Quoting:

* While the focus on illegal migration remains, the original goal of stopping African citizens from migrating into Europe appears to have been lost entirely. Instead, the declaration pronounces African legal migration to be a positive thing, even stressing the beneficial idea of migration of certain groups, such as researchers and business people.

* No one seems to ask how draining Africa of skilled labor, such as businessmen and researchers, is going to help the continent develop and thus stem the trend of migration.

* The Hungarian government appears to be the only government that considers whether the citizens it was elected to serve would support the declaration. Other European governments appear to think that asking their electorates what they think about African migration into Europe is irrelevant.

. . . Avramopoulos does not consider [it] his job to stop migration. "We cannot and will never be able to stop migration", he wrote in late 2017. "At the end of the day, we all need to be ready to accept migration, mobility and diversity as the new norm and tailor our policies accordingly".

Good for them. Too bad other countries haven't taken the same initiative.

How do these beaurocrats and politicians get away with this. Why does the media hide or deflect the consequences of these agreements? The mind boggles.

They get away with it because most voters don't think long term and are more interested in their personal finances than anything else. Regarding the media, I'm not sure, but I think they're afraid of being accused of stoking up racial tension.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-46611320  Quoting:

Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel has offered his resignation just days after one of his main coalition partners quit in a row over migration.

Mr Michel lost the backing of the nationalist New Flemish Alliance (N-VA) over his support for a UN migration deal signed in Marrakesh last week. He announced his intention to resign after opposition parties refused to support his minority government. Mr Michel told King Philippe of his decision late on Tuesday. The king has yet to announce whether he will accept the resignation. Belgians were due to go to the polls in May and the king will meet party leaders on Wednesday to decide whether there is any support for early elections.

Mr Michel, 42, took office in October 2014 after forming a right-wing coalition, becoming at 38 the country's youngest prime minister since 1841. He may stay on as caretaker prime minister until parliament is dissolved in April. He rejected the idea of early elections in a speech to parliament on Tuesday. Mr Michel had previously defended the Marrakesh migration pact, saying it presented an "opportunity for better European and international co-operation". Belgium's UN ambassador made it clear that the signing of the accord would go ahead in New York on Wednesday, despite Mr Michel's decision to tender his resignation.

The deal, which is not legally binding, seeks an international approach to migration that "reaffirms the sovereign rights of states to determine their national migration policy" and asserts the "fundamental" importance of legal migration. But critics in Europe believe it will lead to increased immigration to the continent. In July, UN members agreed the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration. It was signed by 164 countries, with the US and a number of European states - including Austria, Hungary, Italy, Poland and Slovakia - refusing to formally adopt the agreement.

Over the weekend, thousands of demonstrators marched in Brussels against the pact. Police deployed tear gas and water cannon as clashes broke out. A counter-protest organised by left-wing groups and charities in the city centre drew about 1,000 people.
