https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leeds-45029755  Quoting:

Former English Defence League (EDL) leader Tommy Robinson has been released on bail after winning an appeal against a contempt of court finding. The 35-year-old admitted the charge and was jailed in May for filming outside Leeds Crown Court during a trial. At the Court of Appeal, Lord Chief Justice Lord Burnett ruled the case be reheard as there had been technical flaws by the judge who jailed him.

Robinson's solicitors said everyone has the "right to a fair hearing".

The far-right activist, from Luton, was not present for the ruling in London and was released from his 13-month sentence being served at Onley Prison, near Rugby just before 15:30 BST. Speaking to reporters, Robinson said: "All the British media do is lie. I have a lot to say but nothing to you. I want to thank the British public for all their support."

In his written judgement, Lord Burnett said: "We are satisfied that the finding of contempt made in Leeds following a fundamentally flawed process, in what we recognise were difficult and unusual circumstances, cannot stand. We will direct that the matter be reheard before a different judge."

Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley Lennon, will attend the Old Bailey for the hearing, conducted by the Recorder of London, "as soon as reasonably possible".

Analysis: By Dominic Casciani, BBC home affairs correspondent

This morning, the Lord Chief Justice's ruling in Robinson's appeal underlined that the rule of law - the rules that apply to us all - must be applied fairly in all circumstances. And that's why the Court of Appeal ruled that Robinson's second conviction in a year for contempt of court was flawed. In essence, the five hours from arrest to sentence at Leeds Crown Court was rushed.

Robinson wasn't told what specific parts of his activity at the court had been potentially prejudicial to a jury - meaning nobody to this day knows exactly what he did wrong. Further, he immediately removed the offending video from Facebook on the court's order and the judge should have then adjourned the matter to give him longer to prepare a defence.

Tommy Robinson is still convicted of contempt in relation to his behaviour at Canterbury last year where he received his three month sentence for potentially derailing a fair trial. Today, the Court of Appeal said that very same right to a fair hearing means Robinson should have a full opportunity to put his case without rushing to judge.

He's a likeable rogue (coquin in French). I think he will still be found guilty at the retrial but get a short sentence.

Robinson's former assistant, Lucy Brown, has been making some criticism of him and seems to have deleted her Twitter account among rumours of threats.

From the Times.co.uk:
Tommy Robinson, the far-right leader, was bankrolled until recently by a US tech billionaire whose company’s British clients include the supermarket giant Asda.

Robert Shillman, founder and chairman of the Nasdaq-listed multinational Cognex, helped to pay Robinson’s high-five-figure salary, in the latest example of American cash flowing into the British hard right. The disclosure comes as Robinson’s former assistant, also paid by a Shillman-funded group, told The Sunday Times that the anti-Islam activist practised a form of “panto journalism” that was “leading people down a dark path.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/article-6049325/GUY-ADAMS-asks-British-hatemonger-Tommy-Robinson-funded-American-billionaires.html Excerpt:

"I used to think, foolishly, that when he went home he was doing his research and putting case files together," Brown said. "He doesn't. He just goes home and eats crisps and looks himself up on Twitter."

The highest rated comments below that article are supportive of Robinson.

I listened to a radio interview Lucy Brown gave about a week ago. She was reluctant to criticise Robinson too much and defended him and his supporters somewhat. The interviewers said they thought she was scared.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-46495595  Quoting:

Thousands of people have taken to the streets in London to march in a UKIP-organised rally and a counter-protest march.

A UKIP spokesman said "quite a few thousand" supporters turned up to their "Brexit Betrayal" march alongside controversial activist Tommy Robinson. Marching in opposition were anti-fascist groups and Labour-backed campaigners. A spokeswoman said 15,000 turned up to oppose Mr Robinson's rally.

Laura Parker of Labour grassroots group Momentum claimed their counter-demonstration "vastly" outnumbered UKIP's "nearly five to one". She said: "Even with the UKIP machine in tow, he [Robinson] only managed to bring a few thousand supporters out on the streets while we mobilised nearly 15,000 to march against his racism and bigotry."

Police have not provided an estimate of crowd sizes.

. . . Later in a rally close to parliament and Downing Street, the UKIP leader Gerrard Batten said it had been an achievement to get the far-right activist Tommy Robinson involved in the demonstration. Mr Robinson who denies claims he is a racist and fascist, joined the front of the march saying it was "a beautiful day."

Mr Robinson and his supporters gathered outside the Houses of Parliament where they were addressed by UKIP leader Gerard Batten. The former English Defence League leader was recently appointed as an adviser to Mr Batten, prompting a number of people to resign from the party, including former leader Nigel Farage,

Mr Batten told the crowd: "If Parliament does not take Britain out of the European Union it will be the biggest constitutional crisis since the English Civil War. In 1642 the king put himself in opposition to parliament. Parliament won and the king lost his head."

Weyman Bennett, of Stand Up To Racism and one of the counter-protest organisers, said: "I believe that the majority of people in this country reject fascism and racism. There's deep concern in Britain about the growth of the far right in this country, under the guise of Tommy Robinson and UKIP." He added: "We are excited about the amount of women organisers, Muslim groups and trade unions that have come out."

TR is standing as an independent candidate in the upcoming European Parliament election. He's been meeting some rowdy opposition to his campaign but he's a pretty good speaker, I'll give him that.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-48887440 Quoting:

Ex-English Defence League leader Tommy Robinson has been found in contempt of court for his Facebook Live broadcast of defendants in a criminal trial. He was found guilty of interfering with the trial of a sexual grooming gang at Leeds Crown Court in May 2018. Two High Court judges found his conduct "amounted to a serious interference with the administration of justice". The court ruled that the 36-year-old, from Luton, committed contempt by breaking reporting restrictions.

Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, had denied any wrongdoing, saying he had only referred to information that was already in the public domain. Following the verdict at the Old Bailey, he told the BBC he had been convicted "for who I am, not what I have done".

One of the senior judges, Dame Victoria Sharp, said the court will consider what penalty to impose for the contempt - which carries a maximum penalty of two years - and give full reasons for the decision at a later date. She said Robinson breached the reporting restriction imposed on the trial by live-streaming a video from outside the public entrance to the court and by "aggressively confronting and filming" some of the defendants. The judge said the content of the video "gave rise to a substantial risk that the course of justice in that case would be seriously impeded" and the confrontation of the defendants was a direct interference with the course of justice . . .

A provisional date of 11 July was given for Robinson's sentencing hearing.

I've never heard of asylum being granted between two Western nations. Anyway, he was sentenced yesterday to nine months for contempt of court:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-48950672 Quoting:

During the 2018 case at Leeds Crown Court, reporting restrictions had been put in place postponing the publication of any details until the end of a series of linked trials involving 29 defendants.

However, Robinson, 36, from Luton, broadcast footage from outside the court on 25 May 2018, while the jury in the second trial of the series was considering its verdict. The video lasted an hour-and-a-half and was viewed online 250,000 times, after being live-streamed on Facebook.

In a written ruling, Dame Victoria Sharp said Robinson had claimed his intention in making the broadcast was to "denounce the media" for their behaviour. But the judges found he had encouraged others "to harass a defendant by finding him, knocking on his door, following him, and watching him". This created "a real risk that the course of justice would be seriously impeded", she said . . .

The nine month jail sentence served on Thursday includes six months for the Leeds Crown Court offence last year and another three months for contempt of court, following a suspended sentence given at Canterbury Crown Court in May 2017. At the Old Bailey on Thursday, Dame Victoria told Robinson that the time he previously spent behind bars for contempt would be taken into account, reducing his sentence to 19 weeks - of which he would serve half before being released. Robinson's barrister Richard Furlong raised the possibility of an appeal against the court's decision and was told he has 28 days to apply.

The attorney general said the sentencing illustrated how seriously the courts would take matters of contempt. "I would urge everyone to think carefully about whether their social media posts could amount to contempt of court," Mr Cox added.
