Confusing Victims with Heroes Empty Confusing Victims with Heroes

Post Neon Knight Fri 1 Jun - 21:45

It seems that society is becoming more sentimental in its view of people who who die as victims of crime, especially terrorism. In the past, public commemoration rituals were mostly reserved for soldiers who had died in battle, policmen who had been killed on duty, famous politicians or, at least, for sporting heroes.

Now, just being a random victim of a terrorist bomb is somehow seen as having made a sacrifice, when the person was just going about his or her everyday business. I think this detracts from the respect paid to true heroes, especially soldiers, who die while fighting to benefit their country. A random group of victims is just as likely to contain cheats, thieves and psychopaths as any other group randomly drawn from the population.

Victims will have funerals where those who had been close to them can pay their respects together. There's no need for public services broadcast on television.

I think the main goals of thoses commemoration is to let people beleive governement act against terrorism.
Rather than fuels thoses kind of attacks when they promote immigration and multiculturalism.

I think there is truth in that. These services enable politicians to look concerned and say things like "We will not allow terrorists to destroy our way of life". Then they will announce more powers for the police but do nothing about immigration. Like trying to stop water coming through the ceiling by placing a bucket on the floor.

Confusing Victims with Heroes Empty Re: Confusing Victims with Heroes

That is a very good point.
Mixing the victims with heroes is not doing justice to the heroic men and women that truly deserve recognition. I guess it is comparable to the trend now a days, for every child to get trophy......just for participating.

I think another problem is, all of that media attention spreads fear and that is exactly what the terrorists want, for the free world to live in fear.

I agree funerals should be a private affair, unless the victim was a public figure.

Families of the deceased should keep quiet and at least attempt to avoid social media.
