Is Sardinia in Europe or Africa?
Is Sardinia in Europe or Africa?
Sardinia belongs to Italy but, geographically speaking, is it in Europe, Africa or neither?

Re: Is Sardinia in Europe or Africa?
European (Europe) periphery/territory.

'The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piercing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new dark age. Re: Is Sardinia in Europe or Africa?
Let's take Corsica out of the picture:

Or move it to the southern end of Sardinia:

Still think Sardinia is European?

Lol..... NK you can not simply move or sink an island at will,Corsica is Corsica.
How about if Europe had to pick just one of the islands to call their their own. Would you pick Corsica,Sardinia or Sicily?
I think I would say Sicily. Even though Sicily is more south than the other two islands ,it is closest to its mother ,Italy. The other two are very isolated from the mainland. Historically Islands of exile and barbarians.
I was reading about what Cicero said about Sardinia:
"Africa ipsa parens illa Sardiniae". ...."Africa itself is the parent of Sardinia"
They have a bizarre flag too, hard to know what it means.

Re: Is Sardinia in Europe or Africa?
You're actually thinking about it in the same way as I have been. Sardinia is pretty much equally distant from the European and North African mainlands and my point is that the presence of Corsica (which is European) creates the illusion that Sardinia belongs to Europe because they look to be in a pair together.@Sary wrote:Lol..... Another way to break the illusion is to draw a sea border between the two mainlands:

I rest my case!

A sea border.....
is that for real? I don't know anything about sea borders.
Can we disregard latitude ?

Re: Is Sardinia in Europe or Africa?
Not European for me. The culture, the people are a bit weird in European standards.
Aparté : Corsica, even if it’s french territory, look far more Italian about language, culture and people. So personnaly I don’t care if you put her out of Europe

They look European to me. The reason they look different from others is because they don't have a lot (if any) steppe ancestry. They're basically pure WNF with some Western HG in the mix.
If you google image "Sardianian woman" you get lots of good pics of women in traditional costume. they don't seem exotic by southern european standards.

Yeah, I wasn't questioning the Europeaness of the Sardinian people, just the geographical classification of the island. Wikipedia: "The first people to settle in Sardinia during the Upper Paleolithic and the Mesolithic came probably from the Iberian Peninsula and the Italian Peninsula."
It's kind of the Iceland of the South, not strictly in Europe but with a European population.

Iberian peninsula and Italy? No wonder I find them attracive.
But I still think it fits. It's clustered in with Corsica and it's right around Italy. I think Cyprus is a better example of an island that's like Iceland to the South.
