Bosnian Serbs Urge Support for Trump over Jerusalem

Republika Srpska President Milorad Dodik asked the Serb member of the tripartite Bosnian presidency to oppose a UN General Assembly resolution criticising Trump for recognising Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

The president of Republika Srpska, Bosnia’s Serb-dominated entity, Milorad Dodik, sent a letter to the Serb member of the Bosnian presidency, Mladen Ivanic, calling for Bosnia to support Israel and US President Donald Trump at the UN General Assembly on Thursday.

The UN General Assembly is holding an emergency session on Thursday to vote on a draft resolution rejecting Trump's controversial decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

"In the light of the delicacy of the years-long problem between Israel and Palestine, and in the light of President Donald Trump's decision to move the US diplomatic mission to Jerusalem, I urge you… to do all that is necessary that the head of the Bosnia and Herzegovina mission to the UN does not support the resolution,” Dodik wrote to Ivanic.

Earlier this month, in a move that caused public outrage, Trump announced the decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

The UN General Assembly maintains that the Jerusalem issue should be resolved between Israel and the Palestinians, who also claim the city as their capital.

Dodik’s letter to Ivanic says that Republika Srpska and Israel have friendly relations and that any diplomatic action by Bosnia that could endanger this friendship should be prevented.

"We fully understand the complexity of the situation in the Middle East and advocate a peaceful solution to the problem between Israel and Palestine," the letter added.

However, the Bosnian presidency has made a decision to refrain from voting on the resolution at the General Assembly, according to Ivanic’s office.

The Bosnian presidency is in charge of the foreign policy of the country and everything is decided consensually.

In order for a Bosnian representative to the UN to vote in accordance with Dodik's request, the consent of all three members of the Bosnian presidency would be needed.

It is almost certain that consent would not be given by Bakir Izetbegovic, the Bosniak member of the presidency.

Bosnia has not officially expressed its position on recognition of Jerusalem. But in Sarajevo on Monday, a support meeting for the Palestinians and a protest against the decision of US President Donald Trump to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel was held.

Trump has threatened to withhold “billions” of dollars of US aid from countries that vote in favour of the UN General Assembly resolution.

On this general topic (Wikipedia):

During the 1948 Arab–Israeli War, West Jerusalem was among the areas captured and later annexed by Israel while East Jerusalem, including the Old City, was captured and later annexed by Jordan. Israel captured East Jerusalem from Jordan during the 1967 Six-Day War and subsequently annexed it into Jerusalem, together with additional surrounding territory. One of Israel's Basic Laws, the 1980 Jerusalem Law, refers to Jerusalem as the country's undivided capital. All branches of the Israeli government are located in Jerusalem, including the Knesset (Israel's parliament), the residences of the Prime Minister and President, and the Supreme Court. Whilst the international community rejected the annexation as illegal and treats East Jerusalem as Palestinian territory occupied by Israel, Israel has a stronger claim to sovereignty over West Jerusalem. The international community, other than the United States, the Czech Republic and Vanuatu, does not recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital, and, since the 1980s, the city hosts no foreign embassies, although a Presidential order has been issued in the United States to move its embassy to Jerusalem.

None of Jerusalem is within Israel's original borders so I don't see the justification in its being the Israelis' capital city.

Agree with you. Maybe they want and support this decision bc of  religious and pro Jewish reason. It's an important city for Christians and Jews, too and it was the capital of United Kingdom of Israel during King David.
They don't think very rationally.
