African migrants cross fence into Spanish enclave

Post Neon Knight on Thu 10 Aug - 23:04

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-39002111

Around 700 migrants have stormed a six-metre (20 ft) security fence that separates Morocco from Ceuta, a Spanish territory in North Africa.

Police said security cameras showed the migrants breaking through one of the gates, some wielding shears and clubs. The Ceuta regional government said almost 500 made it across the razor wire barrier.

Ceuta and Melilla, another Spanish territory in North Africa, have the EU's only land borders with Africa. As a result, they are popular crossing points for migrants hoping to reach a new life in Europe.

This is 'old news' we could say.

Almost every day they try to pass through the border one way or another.
Today, or yersterday maybe, 700 of them tried it again but this time the morrocan police stop them, but a dinghy with several dozens of sub-saharians on board arrived to a Cadiz beach full of german tourists, once on shore they ran away in all directions.

It's not like the massive illegal immigration coming from Lybia and being 'rescued' by NGO as if it was a taxi service, it's more like a constant drop by drop, sometimes quite a big drops, during all the year, not only in the summer.

I wonder why this particular incident made international news then? I suppose they just rotate their coverage of different places.

Anyway, part of the reason I posted it was to increase awarness of those Spanish enclaves in North Africa, which I asume many people will be unaware of. We could look at the history of those sometime.

Periodically this kind of incident jumps to international news, particulary if the jump (that's how spanish press call it, 'salto') is successful and some hundreds of africans reach the spanish side of the fence.
But it happens almost on a daily basis depending on the season; today has been another try by 300 sub-saharians but morrocan police stopped them again.

The conquest of Melilla goes back to catholic kings I think, and Ceuta was first a portuguese enclave which passed to spanish hands some centuries ago.
Felipe Gonzalez gave spanish nationality to thousands of muslim morrocans living in both cities after a series of protests instigated by morrocco, and well, today both cities are a focus of illegal immigration and islamism, besides of poverty.

In my opinion those cities are not a strategic advantage anymore, but a heavy burden for Spain.

Spain, should sell the place to Moroco.

I'am pretty sure it cost a pretty amount of money every years in term of security. And there are still too much immigrants who pass.

Its a shame for injustices like this to happen. Iberia has beautiful scenery and a rich history. Some people/immigrants have nothing better to do, but undermine the economic systems in place and illegally enter countries when they are obviously not wanted firstly. There is only so much an economy can sustain before overpopulation and cultural differences divides a country. Nevertheless, this is why countries have borders for a reason; in order to maintain peace, stability and cast out foreign threats accordingly.

Spain poised to top Greece in migrant sea arrivals this year

According to the IOM's latest figures, until August 6th, close to 8,200 migrants had arrived in Spain so far this year.   That is more than triple the number recorded at the same time last year, according to Joel Millman, a senior IOM spokesman, and already more than the total arrivals in 2016.

While the figure pales in comparison with Italy -- where more than 96,400 migrants have landed so far this year -- Spain is catching up with Greece where 11,713 alighted from boats in the same timeframe. "It's possible that Spain will outperform Greece this year," Millman told AFP. "If so, that's a big change."

He said many people taking the long route towards Europe were from west African countries like Senegal, Gambia, Guinea or Ivory Coast. But to get to Italy, they have to cross the Sahara desert and crucially Libya, wracked by chaos as rival militias and administrations seek to control the oil-rich country. Faced with the danger, some may be deciding to go up along the coast instead.

"We assume that some of the change is due to the fact that the route is considered a safe route up to the coast through Morocco," Millman said. He added that the boats crossing the choppy sea to Spain were much smaller than those launching from Libya to Italy. In Libya there "appears to be a very deliberate strategy to put people out there, in overloaded boats that begin to take on water almost immediately and then it's a race to see how quickly the people on the boat can summon aid," he said. "Whereas in Spain, the strategy is smaller craft hoping to come in undetected, and undoubtedly some do."

Nowadays it seems very improbable as it would be regarded as inhumane and against the sacred human rights... but if the pressure goes on and on who knows.

Italy for example has begun a very hostile campaing against NGO that rescue immigrants near Lybia and it has given very good results, with some abondoning their humanitarian task and other being accused of collaboration with smugglers.

Being hostile towars humanitarian NGO was unthinkable... until it has been done. Angry Lady
